Gold Coast Off-Leash Dog Beaches: Where to Go and the Rules
Share
Quick answer: the Gold Coast's main off-leash dog beaches are The Spit Dog Beach at Main Beach, the calmer Marine Stadium on the Broadwater side of The Spit, Palm Beach Dog Beach at the Currumbin Creek end, and Tallebudgera Dog Beach at the creek end of Palm Beach. Elsewhere, dogs are generally allowed on beaches only on lead and more than 200m from the flags, and some spots have time limits. Check the City of Gold Coast's Dog Exercise Area Map before you go.
What's the default rule for dogs on Gold Coast beaches?
Several guides, including The Weekend Edition and Travelnuity, describe the default the same way: dogs are allowed on most Gold Coast beaches on a lead, but not on patrolled beaches within 200m of the flagged swimming areas, and not in other prohibited areas. Off-leash beaches are separately signed. The City of Gold Coast's Dog Exercise Area Map and app show off-leash, restricted and prohibited areas.
The Spit Dog Beach, Main Beach
The Gold Coast's best-known dog beach, on the ocean side of The Spit at the northern end of the coast. It's a big stretch of sand with room to run, but it's surf beach, so watch the conditions. Check the signs and beach markers for the exact off-leash section.
Marine Stadium, The Spit (Broadwater side)
Across from The Spit Dog Beach, the enclosed Marine Stadium has calm, flat water, which suits nervous swimmers and puppies. Travelnuity places the off-leash section on the eastern side, between Doug Jennings Park and Muriel Henchman Park.
Palm Beach Dog Beach (Currumbin Creek end)
A large off-leash area at the southern end of Palm Beach, starting on the northern side of the Currumbin Creek entrance and wrapping around to the ocean beach. Travelnuity describes it running to lifeguard tower 13, with no time restrictions. You get both calm creek water and surf. Keep your dog on lead from the car park to the off-leash area.
Tallebudgera Dog Beach (Tallebudgera Creek end)
At the other end of Palm Beach, north of the Tallebudgera Surf Life Saving Club's patrolled area and running to the Tallebudgera Creek entrance. Several guides describe it as off-leash 24/7. Because it sits close to a patrolled area, respect the boundary signs.
Calmer, smaller spots
- Paradise Point foreshore: a designated off-leash area next to Paradise Point Parklands on the Broadwater.
- Biggera Waters: guides including Discovery Parks list off-leash access at set times only (5am–8am and 4pm–7pm), with dogs on lead at other times.
- Canal and river parks: several council parks, such as Paradise Waters and Franquin Park in Surfers Paradise, have off-leash areas with water access.

Gold Coast beach safety for dogs
- Heat: Queensland sand gets hot fast. Test with the back of your hand and avoid midday walks in summer. See heatstroke in dogs.
- Washed-up fish: pufferfish are common in Queensland waters and toxic to dogs. See pufferfish poisoning in dogs.
- Sand: repeated fetch on sand can lead to sand impaction. See sand impaction in dogs.
- Collar fit after swimming: see why dogs slip their collars at the beach.
- Visiting from interstate? Save the nearest emergency vet before you hit the beach.
