The Best Dog-Friendly Beaches on Sydney's Northern Beaches

Quick answer: most of the Northern Beaches' famous ocean beaches — Manly, Dee Why, Narrabeen, Bilgola, Palm Beach — don't allow dogs on the sand. The places your dog can swim are mostly calmer harbour, Pittwater and lagoon spots: Rowland Reserve at Bayview, Sandy Bay and Clontarf, the Mona Vale Beach dog area, Great Mackerel Beach, and the lagoon reserves at Curl Curl and Queenscliff. Several have time restrictions, so always check Northern Beaches Council's off-leash page and the signs on the day.

Where can dogs go to the beach on the Northern Beaches?

Northern Beaches Council lists its dog off-leash areas on its website, and only some of them include sand or water. These are the ones with beach or water access:

Rowland Reserve, Bayview

A local favourite on Pittwater, with a grassy reserve and a sandy shoreline where dogs can swim in calm water. Council lists toilets and water on site.

Sandy Bay, Clontarf

A small harbour beach where the off-leash area covers the sand flats and part of the lawn. Calm water makes it good for nervous swimmers and puppies.

Clontarf Reserve

Next door to Sandy Bay, with a harbour beach. Council notes time restrictions here, so check the hours before you go.

Mona Vale Beach dog off-leash area

One of the few ocean-facing options, at a designated section of Mona Vale Beach. Time restrictions apply, and ocean conditions can be rougher than the harbour spots.

Great Mackerel Beach

Reached by ferry from Palm Beach, with a designated dog area and set off-leash hours. A great day trip if your dog is comfortable on a ferry.

Lagoon reserves: Flora and Ritchie Roberts Reserve (Curl Curl) and Lagoon Park (Queenscliff)

Off-leash reserves beside Curl Curl and Manly lagoons, where dogs can paddle. Lagoon water quality can change after heavy rain, so check Beachwatch before letting your dog swim.

Rules change, and Council has reviewed beach dog areas several times (including at Station Beach, Palm Beach, where dogs are currently prohibited). Keep your dog safe at the beach
