The Cavoodle AirTag Setup: Collar Width, Coat and Fit for Doodles
Share
Quick answer: for a Cavoodle or other doodle, use a flat collar that fits with two fingers underneath, check its width before buying a holder, and slide the AirTag holder to sit on the back or side of the neck where the coat is easiest to part. Curly coats hide and tangle around collars, so check the holder after every groom and every swim. The Pawfetchers holder fits flat collars 15–25mm wide; very small Cavoodles on collars narrower than 15mm will need a slightly wider collar first.
The Cavoodle is Australia's most popular dog breed, according to Pet Insurance Australia data reported by Canstar, and Groodles and Labradoodles aren't far behind. We have a soft spot for doodles: Pawfetchers started because our groodle, Indie, went missing at Freshwater Beach and was eventually found sitting by our car. Here's what we've learned about setting up an AirTag on a curly-coated dog.
What collar width does a Cavoodle need?
Doodles range from toy Cavoodles to large Groodles, so there's no single answer. Measure your dog's current collar with a ruler across the strap.
| Dog | Common collar widths | Pawfetchers holder fit |
|---|---|---|
| Toy or small Cavoodle puppy | Often 10–15mm | Fits from 15mm; narrower collars won't grip |
| Adult Cavoodle, Spoodle | Often 15–20mm | Fits |
| Groodle, Labradoodle | Often 20–25mm | Fits up to 25mm |
| Large doodle on a wide or martingale collar | Over 25mm | Too wide; use a 25mm flat collar for the holder |
These are rough ranges, not rules. Fit the collar to the dog first, then choose accessories that suit the collar. Our guide to choosing a collar width and material has more.
Do curly coats cause problems with an AirTag holder?
They can, in three ways:
- Hiding: a fluffy neck can bury the holder, so you can't see at a glance that it's there. A bright colour helps — see our colour guide.
- Matting: curly hair can mat where a collar rubs. Brush the collar line regularly and ask your groomer about keeping it tidy.
- Wet coat, looser collar: a soaked doodle coat flattens, so a collar that fits dry can loosen after a swim. Re-check fit after the beach. See why dogs slip their collars at the beach.
Where should the AirTag sit on a doodle's collar?
Slide the holder so it sits on the back or side of the neck, not under the chin where it can press when your dog lies down or eats. Make sure it sits flat against the collar, not twisted. Our step-by-step guide on how to fit an AirTag holder shows the method.
What about grooming days?
Doodles visit the groomer often, and collars usually come off for the clip. Two habits help:
- Ask the groomer to put the collar back on with the holder in place, or check it yourself at pick-up.
- Open Find My on the way home and confirm the AirTag shows up next to you.
If your groomer or sitter has your dog for the day, you can share the AirTag's location with them temporarily. See how to share your dog's AirTag.
Are doodles likely to wander?
Every dog is different. Many doodles are social and curious, which can mean following a friendly stranger or another dog. Anxious dogs can bolt when something frightens them; Indie is an anxious dog, which is part of why we take tracking seriously. Whatever your doodle's personality, the basics are the same: ID tag, microchip details up to date, recall practice, and a tracker as a backup. An AirTag isn't live GPS; it shows where your dog was last detected by nearby Apple devices, which works well in suburbs and at busy beaches.

FAQs
Will an AirTag holder fit a Cavoodle puppy?
Only if the collar is at least 15mm wide and fits properly. Very small puppies may need to grow into a slightly wider collar first. Never loosen or swap a collar just to fit an accessory.
Is an AirTag too heavy for a small Cavoodle?
An AirTag is small and light, but every dog is different. Watch your dog for the first few days and check the collar isn't rubbing.
Can doodles swim with an AirTag on?
An AirTag is rated IP67. In the Pawfetchers holder, rated waterproof to 1 metre for 30 minutes, everyday swims are fine. Check the seal is closed before swimming and rinse in fresh water after the beach.
Set your doodle up with the Pawfetchers waterproof AirTag holder — fits flat collars 15–25mm, 14 colours, $19.99. Two doodles? The 2-Pack lets you pick any two colours. AirTag sold separately.
