Is AirTag Safe for Dogs? Everything You Need to Know

Apple AirTag has become a popular way for dog owners to add a backup for finding their dog. A common question is: is an AirTag actually safe for dogs? The short answer: yes, with the right setup and a couple of precautions. Apple designs AirTag for items rather than pets, so it's worth understanding the risks.

Is the AirTag itself safe?

An AirTag is small and smooth. The main safety considerations are:

• Battery: AirTag uses a CR2032 lithium coin battery. Swallowed button batteries are a serious emergency for dogs, so the AirTag must be held where your dog can't chew it.
• Size: loose, an AirTag could be swallowed or chewed. Never let your dog play with one.
• Weight: Apple lists AirTag at about 11 grams, so most dogs won't notice it on a well-fitted collar.

Use a holder that fully encloses the AirTag

The safest setup is an AirTag fully enclosed in a holder that sits flat on the collar, with nothing dangling for your dog (or another dog) to grab.
